Facts About Styrofoam

Styrofoam, also known as expanded polystyrene (EPS), is light, versatile, and everywhere — but it’s also one of the most persistent and space-consuming plastics in landfill. These facts reveal why responsible recycling matters more than ever.

98 % air, 100 % problem. Despite its low weight, EPS can occupy more than 25 % of landfill space by volume.

240 000 m³ of EPS was once sent to landfill each year in New South Wales — equal to 240 000 ute loads stretching 1 080 km, longer than the drive from Melbourne to Sydney.

That same volume could fill the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall 10 times over.

EPS takes hundreds of years to break down, fragmenting into harmful microplastics that pollute land and waterways.

Only 10 % of Styrofoam in Australia is currently recycled.

Every 10 m³ of recycled Styrofoam prevents about 150 kg of waste from entering landfill.

Recycled EPS is reborn as picture frames, skirting boards, insulation panels, outdoor furniture, and packaging materials — proving plastic can have a second life.
